ISO 17025:2017, is the international standard for testing and calibration laboratories and outlines the general requirements for laboratories to carry out tests and/or calibrations, including sampling. It’s a set of requirements those laboratories use to show that they operate a quality management system and that they’re technically competent to do the work that they do.
It covers testing and calibration performed using standard methods, non-standard methods, and laboratory-developed methods. This standard also helps to facilitate co-operation between laboratories and other bodies by generating wider acceptance of results between countries.
The laboratories that comply with ISO 17025 also operate in accordance with ISO 9001 and can implement a single quality system that meets the requirements of both Standards. But this does not apply vice versa. Accreditation according to ISO 17025 is not the same as being certified against ISO 9001.
Laboratories use ISO 17025:2017 to develop and implement a quality that will improve their ability to consistently produce valid results and as a certificate to confirm its competence to customers, regulatory authorities and accreditation bodies. This standard is applicable to all laboratories regardless of the number of personnel or the extent of the scope of testing and/or calibration activities.
