COSHH – Reduce Your Risk of Exposure.
Control of Hazardous Substances to Health (COSHH)
As the summer months are fast approaching, in addition to the increase in good weather, it is important that you protect your skin while at work. Inhalation, ingestion and contact with harmful substances can cause short to long term health problems such as: Asthma, Dermatitis and Cancer. By controlling how employees could come into contact with hazardous substances will reduce the risk to their health.
Duty of Care
It is your duty as an employer to ensure exposure to hazardous substances is controlled to workers. By following The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) 2002, employers can focus on good practice and meet their duties of complying to COSHH regulations. To reduce health risks, an employer needs to ensure the following:
- Wear appropriate equipment – This includes: PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and using ventilation and extraction systems when necessary.
- Control ways of working – Through ‘Work Permits’, testing control equipment regularly and having appropriate supervision.
- Worker Behaviour – By training employees, they will be aware of the dangers and how to manage them correctly.
