We always hear ‘let’s use less energy’ but what if your company is growing.  You might need to use more electricity, gas, steam, diesel for your company to flourish.

What about if we all said ‘let’s manage our energy consumption better’ or ‘let’s become more efficient in our processes.  In this case, companies could continue to grow and develop and be more efficient, reducing the use of unnecessary energy, saving money and concentrating on what is needed.

But HOW?

The answer is in ISO 50001:2018 for energy management systems!

What is energy management?

Energy management is the process of monitoring, controlling, and conserving energy in a building or organisation. Much of the importance of energy saving stems from the global need to save energy and reduce carbon emissions – this global need affects energy prices, emissions targets, and legislation, all of which lead to several compelling reasons why you should save energy at home and work.

We need to save energy to reduce the damage to our planet (earth!) and to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels that are becoming increasingly limited in supply.

And what is ISO 50001: energy management system?

An energy management system, simply put is a framework that helps an organisation achieve its energy goals through consistent review, evaluation, and improvement of its energy performance. Within the UK and Ireland, there are 1393 ISO certificates held, with An Garda Síochána being the first national police force in the world to achieve ISO 50001 certification! (Source: ISO)

What are the benefits of an energy management system?

The successful implementation of an energy management system can provide significant benefits, including:

  • Reduced energy and operational costs, which leads to increased profitability
  • Satisfy customer requirements
  • Reduce carbon/greenhouse gas emission from company activities
  • Increased efficiency of energy sources
  • Increased assurance of legal, internal compliance
  • Variables affecting energy use and consumption are identified, and
  • Increased understanding of energy use and consumption via communication.

What are the stages in the implementation of an energy management system?

Will ISO 50001 benefit my small company?

ISO 50001 improves performance by using less energy. This is the same no matter what size your company is. You will cut your carbon emissions as well as your energy bills, saving not only energy but also money.

Having an energy management system in place puts you in a stronger position to meet environmental targets and win tenders. ISO 50001 gives you good environmental credentials making you stand out from your competitors.
